The Guiding Light, after 72 years of both Radio and TV, will go dark in September after 16,000 episodes....Wow! Yes, it is due to declining viewership! It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running TV drama. It first aired in 1937 on NBC radio as a 15 minute serial...then moved to CBS TV in 1952. It still was just 15 minutes in length, then went to 30 minutes and finally became a 1 hour drama in 1977!!
