It's official. Steve Jobs, the Apple co-founder and face behind such visionary products as the Mac computer, iPod, iPhone and iPad, stepped down as Apple CEO yesterday.
The move comes after Jobs took an extended medical leave earlier this year to deal with undisclosed health problems. Over the last decade, he's undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant.
In his resignation letter to Apple's board, Jobs wrote, "I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."
Tim Cook has been named operations chief, replacing Jobs, who assumes the role of chairman of the board.
In related news, Sprint will join AT&T and Verizon as iPhone carriers when Apple's new device, expected to be called iPhone 5, is released in mid-October.
